Five Ideas to Save your Organization’s Fuel
Have you ever stopped to think about how much your organization spends every day on fuel?
As you may already know from our previous article, up to 40% of operating costs in an organization come from fuel. So, if you want to decrease your operating costs, increase your profits and create a competitive advantage, cutting fuel is an obvious choice. One option would be to get rid of your vehicles and have your salespeople visiting their clients on bikes. Some exercise! For those who deliver, you could get them a metro pass, or maybe a cab. However, if your operations depend on a fleet and equipment, these ideas won’t offer you tangible fuel savings solutions.
With that in mind, we came up with a list of five things you can do to save on fuel and still be highly productive with your fleet of vehicles and trucks:
1. Constantly track the calibration of your tires. Incorrect or non-calibrated tires can increase your fleet’s fuel consumption by up to 20%.
2. Check and replace all air and fuel filters in your fleet every 10 to 15 thousand kilometers (6 to 9 thousand miles). Dirty filters increase fuel consumption by 4%.
3. Use only recommended oils for your type of vehicle. The right choice can save up to 2% of fuel. Also, make sure you review and change the oil every 10,000 KM (6,000 miles).
4. Drive consciously. The way your employees drive your vehicles is another aspect that influences fuel consumption. If they speed up too quickly or brake too suddenly, fuel consumption can increase up to 30% on the open road and 40% in the city.
5. Technology. Despite these many techniques to save fuel, many managers still struggle when trying to optimize their fleet fuel consumption. Technology can contribute immensely to that through efficient systems. On-site or mobile Cardlocks have shown to be an extremely powerful way for managers to control and manage their fuel usage. Through software integration, managers can grant permissions or set restrictions on how much and what grade of fuel an employee can access. Reports with that sort of information, on each vehicle in your fleet, can be conveniently generated and exported to Excel with just a few clicks.
